The 54th Annual VI Athletic Meet had a colourfully different opening under the
direction of the new headmaster Dr G.E.D. Lewis. The sporting events were
preceded by a spectacular Olympic-style march past, with the contingent of
participating athletes, led by the school Athletics Captain, San Seong Lim,
forming the vanguard of contingents representing each of the eight Houses.
Each athlete wore a jersey in the colour of his House. Stirring martial
music was provided by the band of the Royal Hampshire Regiment under its
bandmaster, G. Fidoe. The guest of honour was Mr. E.M.F. Payne, a former VI
Headmaster and now the Federal Director of Education. Adding to the splash
of colour were the specially erected and decorated house tents spread
around the school field, which served as bases for boys of each House. Shaw
House won the prize for the best decorated tent. At the end of the meet,
the various House contingents marched from their tents to form a square
around the prize table to witness the prize-giving by Tengku Rahimah, wife
of the Raja Muda. The Champion House in athletics was Davidson (now SAS).
For the first time since the war, a new event had been introduced for the
sports meet - the Cross Country Run, which had been held a month earlier.
The format of this meet was to set the standard for all subsequent VI Athletic Meets and was widely copied by many other schools and organisations.
