At an assembly at 3 p.m. on Friday April 6, 1923, the Head Master, Mr
R.J.H. Sidney, announced the creation of School Prefects. He talked about
how in Roman times, the Prefects' office was an honourable one. He
indicated that nearly all British public schools were run after school
hours by School Prefects. V.I. Prefects were to be chosen for their
prowess in athletics and scholarship. The first batch of Prefects were
partly elected by the boys themselves (the House captains) and partly
nominated by the Head Master after careful consultation.
The first Prefects would perform duties at the gate, the tuck shop and general duties. They would be given privileges like having their own Prefects' Room, and others as stated in the Prefects' Charter drawn up by the Head Master. The first V.I. Prefects Board consisted of:
