Jesse Owens, the legendary black American athlete who won 3 gold medals in
the 100-metre, 200-metre and long jump events as well as a team gold for
the 4x100 meter men's relay in the 1936 Berlin Olympics paid a visit to the
school. He was shown around the school by the PE teacher, Mr Lim Hock Han.
Owens was in India, Malaya and the Philippines to conduct a series of track and field coaching clinics for budding athletes and the VI, with its excellent track and field facilities, was the obvious local venue for Owens' clinics. Jesse Owens had this to say to our athletes: "The sportmanship and the code of ethics that are learned on the athletic field do not know anything about race, creed or colour. It is the sportsmanship that counts."
