Secretary of State Visit - 1950

The Secretary of State for the Colonies, the Rt Hon. Mr James Griffiths, called on the School on Friday, June 2, 1950. He was met by the British Advisor, the Deputy Director of Education, the Senior Inspector of Schools and the V.I. Headmaster, Mr E.M.F. Payne. Mr Griffiths inspected an exhibition of drawings in the School Hall. He visited the staff room, the prefects’ room, senior classes, the science laboratories and the library.

Mr Griffiths told the school assembled in the quadrangle, “I am glad to meet you who will be the future leaders in every walk of life. It is going to be a very important job and I am sure you will train yourselves for the new responsibilities and new opportunities that are to come.” With a twinkle in his eye, he continued, “I know that the biggest thing that any visitor can do for the school is to give them a holiday, and I would ask the Headmaster to give you all a holiday on Monday.” Led by the School Captain, the School then gave three hearty cheers for Mr Griffiths.
