Here we pull out a scanned picture from our collection or contributors that is related to either the V.I. past or present. If you have any interesting photo or picture about the V.I. or Victorians that you would like to share in this section, please do send the scanned image in GIF or JPEG format, together with a short write up on it to ooibk@pop.jaring.my.

Science Exhibition 1953

More than 100 science pupils of the V.I. have been explaining things a few hundred times a day to members of the public the intricacies of science experiments which they themselves had designed. This was at the annual science exhibition organized by the Science and Mathematics Society for three days at the V.I. science labs. The budding scientists talked themselves hoarse at the end of each day, explaining and answering some tricky questions from more than 3,000 visitors, which included pupils from other schools.

Three exhibits which attracted the most attention were the lie detector, the blood pressure detector and the lung capacity tester. Plans for three hundred exhibits were initially submitted for display by the Society members but these were whittled down to a final list of 200. The science students gave up the first term holidays to plan and set up their exhibits.

It was hoped to show a working television set (10 years before TV came to this country), but at the last minute this was called off because of some broken valves.
