The V.I. Picture of the Month - October 2001

Here we pull out a scanned picture from our collection or contributors that is related to either the V.I. past or present. If you have any interesting photo or picture about the V.I. or Victorians that you would like to share in this section, please do send the scanned image in GIF or JPEG format, together with a short write up on it to ooibk@pop.jaring.my.

Mr William Campbell from the University of Maryland conducted an intensive three-week course for the V.I. Swimming Team in June and July. Combining lectures and swimming sessions, he taught the School Swimmers the secrets of starts and turns, sprints and finishes.

Campbell commended Lo Kahang for his excellent arm movements and Chung Choeng Hoy for his back crawl. Under his new training regime, the School Swimming Team changed its back crawl style completely.

In his younger days, William Campbell was a U.S. Olympic swimmer and, in the Olympics, had beaten his fellow countryman, the famous Johnny Weismuller (who starred in the movies later as Tarzan).
