The V.I. Picture of the Month - January 2001

Here we pull out a scanned picture from our collection or contributors that is related to either the V.I. past or present. The country's first Big Walk (nowadays called a Walkathon) was organized by the Malay Mail in February 1960 and covered a distance of about 15 miles, starting and finishing at the Merdeka Stadium and taking participants to Petaling Jaya via the Federal Highway and back via Old Klang Road. The event attracted thousands of participants including several official teams from the V.I. and many V.I. Old Boys as well. Here R. Alagaratnam (left) of Upper Six Science is seen with team mate A. Ambikapathy somewhere along Old Klang Road. Behind them, wearing a knee guard, is V.I. teacher Mr. (now Datuk) E. J. Lawrence.
