Choo Min Wang, the 1958 Malayan Chess Champion, is seen making a
quick move as he engages seven of the 13 members of the Ipoh ACS
Chess Club, whom he played simultaneously. Min Wang won ten of the
matches.
Back in the V.I., Min Wang was the Chairman of the 1958 V.I. Chess Club and, on one occasion, he played ten Club members simultaneously, losing only one match. A keen chess player, Min Wang read voraciously all the chess books he could lay his hands on in his younger days. He acquired valuable playing experience by taking part in the 1956 SCRC Open Tournament in which he emerged ninth. He was co-winner of the 1957 SCRC Open Tournament, sharing honours with Dr Foo Lum Choon, one of Malaya's chess pioneers. Min Wang prepared diligently for the 1958 Open Malayan Championships by going over the games of great Masters and prepared some openings. Thus, he won two games due to his opponents falling into opening traps. After many hair-raising escapes, he survived the tournament to take first place with one game drawn and the others won, emerging one point ahead of the runner-up.
