Seven Malayan students seen here before leaving for Brisbane on
five-year Australian Government scholarships awarded under the
Colombo Plan. They were to read for science degrees and then
train to be science teachers. Six of the students were from the
Victoria Institution - Saran Singh Sekhon (extreme right), and,
from left, Siew Fook Cheong, Miss Chung Kean Yue, Miss Tang Miew
Yoong, Lau Chee Pun, and Mohd. Ali bin Ibrahim. The sole exception
was Khoo Chin Hock (second from right) from the ACS, Penang. Mohd.
Ali was to read physics while the rest were to read chemistry at
the University of Queensland.
Saran Singh, the former V.I. School Captain, was given a farewell tea party by his fellow prefects. In 1958, Mohd Ali returned to teach physics at the V.I. for a year, while Miss Tang Miew Yoong, better known to her future pupils as Mrs Teh Khoon Heng, taught science at her alma mater from 1959 to 1973.
