The Roger Medal

The Rodger Medal belonging to Choon Wing Hong, the 1916 winner. Founded by Sir John Pickersgill Rodger, K.C.M.G., in 1895, it was awarded to the V.I. boy who stood highest in the Cambridge Oversea School Certificate examination. This practice was discontinued after the war. Instead, post-war winners received book prizes.

The medal measures 2.6 cm. in diameter and weighs 11 gm., making it unlikely to be of pure gold. The inscription on the front reads: "Victoria Institution Selangor" while the back has "Presented to the Best Scholar of Each Year - Founder Sir J. P. Rodger, K.C.M.G." round the rim with the words "Medallist 1916 Choon Wing Hong" inscribed in the centre.

Choon Wing Hong stayed on at the V.I. as a teacher until 1953. His two sons, Thiam Tatt and Thiam Fatt were also Victorians, as is his grandson, Dr David Choon Siew Kit to whom we offer our thanks for this very privileged peek at a hitherto unglimpsed V.I. heritage.
