1931

Our acting headmaster, Mr. E. de la M. Stowell left us during the Xmas holidays and returned to his old school at Bukit Mertajam. His indefatigable vigour for the welfare of the school will be remembered by all. Prominent among the achievements during his term of office are the winning of the much coveted Thomson Cup, the introduction of a school crest and the cross-country runs.

We are glad that volleyball has been introduced into the school. It has attracted many boys during the first few practices and we hope that their interest will not die away after a short time

The dark room in the Science Wing has now been completed with the addition of "light traps".

Boys are forbidden to wear hats while they are in the school building. This is necessary since it is difficult for a newcomer to differentiate between a student and a teacher in these days of "neck-tie, collar; pocket no dollar!". Another plausible reason for forbidding boys to wear hats in the premises is that there is no need for it.

The first annual aquatic sports were held at the Swimming Pool on Monday, 23rd March and were a distinct success. The programme consisted of 16 events and each of them was well contested. The lack of knowledge of the breast stroke was very much in evidence.

It is proposed that the School Soccer Eleven should in future use shirts instead of jerseys. We understand that any players favouring shirts will add a note of distinction.

The badminton singles and doubles tournaments are in full swing. The matches are played in the school hall courts. Some matches are played on rainy days with the lights on ! - perhaps the first time in any Malayan school! The trouble is some of our uncontrollable enthusiasts aim their shuttles at the lamp shades!

The headmaster made the following awards on receipt of the Cambridge examination detailed results:

Rodger Medal 1930 - Tharam Singh
Treacher Scholarship - Kwok Mun Fong
Nugent Walsh Scholarship - Abdullah

A shed has been erected behind the tuckshop to accommodate the cars of teachers. The number of cars is steadily increasing and some of the students hope that when every teacher possesses a car, it will only be a charitable necessity that the boys should be given a free lift to Morib for instruction in sea swimming

The school challenged the MBS to an interschool debate and it was held on Friday 5th June, 1931, at 6:30 pm before a crowded house in the school hall. The subject was "That India is ripe for dominion status". The debate was declared a draw.

We are justly proud of Lall Singh, the ex-cricket captain of the VI Cricket Eleven. His cricketing feats have always been a great source of pleasure to us. Now his crowning success comes in being chosen to play for the trials for the Indian team which is going to India next year.

After an unfortunate lapse of a few months, we are having cinema shows again in the school. There was an attendance of over 400 students on 20th November, 1931, for the picture "Nemesis".

The Cambridge results arrived on 25th May. The percentage of passes for 1940 was 64 compared with 58 for 1939. Owing to the late arrival of these results, the usual prize-giving at the end of the First Term has been postponed.

On 1st May our School closed at 11.45 a.m. to enable the boys to see the "Fight for Freedom" exhibition at the Chinese Assembly Hall.

The existing partnership record at cricket (set by Hera Singh and Abdul Aziz in 1938, when they scored 171 runs) was broken by S. Ratnam and S.D. William scoring 186 between in the match with the M.B.S.; the former made 117 while the latter hit up 70, both being unbeaten.

It is with deepest sorrow that we record the passing of Mrs J. Devadason, on August 31st in London after her second major operation. Throughout her stay at V.I. from 1952-54 and from 1958-61, she had always been actively engaged in promoting the school's extra-curricular activities, especially in the field of drama.
